Scotland Participant FAQs – 2016
Q: Should I bring a laptop?
A: Most of our participants bring laptops or tablets, but it is certainly not required. It’s best for you to consider your writing process and how you will work most effectively.
- If you are used to doing all of your writing on a computer, then it’s a good idea to bring one with you.
- If you are happy writing long hand and wish to travel lighter, it’s fine to do so.
- You won’t be required to print anything as sharing and workshopping will be done orally.
- If you wish to print anyway, you will be able to pay to use the University’s “pay as you go” printing from their computer labs. More information will be provided in your program folder.
- Also, if you haven’t read it already, you might find this post on using your electronics in the UK helpful.
Q: Do I need to call my bank or credit card to let them know I will be abroad?
A: Yes! Before you leave home, call your bank and credit cards to tell them the dates you will be traveling. If you skip this important step, you will probably not be able to use your cards at ATMs or to make purchases. See our post on currency exchange for a refresher.
Q: What should I do if I get delayed on my way to meet the group in Glasgow?
A: Should you be delayed meeting up with us in Glasgow, please call us ASAP at 1-609-442-xxxx. If your flight arrives on July 28 and is delayed, we will check the airport arrival boards for details.
Q: Will I be able to do laundry?
A: We will have access to the coin-operated laundry facilities adjacent to our accommodations. If you plan to do a load, bring a bit of laundry detergent with you or be prepared to pay extra for it.
Q: How do I make phone calls to / from Europe?
A: Many Americans are intimidated by dialing European phone numbers. You needn’t be. With these tips and list of calling codes for Europe, it’s simple, whether you’re calling from the US or within Europe. See this informative article from travel guru, Rick Steves. https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/phones-tech/call-uk-europe
Q: What do I need to know about using my smartphone while abroad?
A: The New York Times has published two terrific articles on this topic: “A Traveler’s Guide to Taking a Smartphone Abroad” http://nyti.ms/1s9XvO5 and “Being Smart About Phone Fees Overseas” http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/23/travel/being-smart-about-phone-fees-overseas.html.
Q: How many people will be participating in the program?
A: Approximately 18 participants plus faculty (Peter, Robbie and Christine), our Cultural Liason (Juliet), staff (Amanda) and a non-participating guest.
Q: What does the travel insurance cover?
A: We are in the process of enrolling everyone in group medical travel insurance. Please be aware that this coverage is different from regular travel insurance. We encourage you to buy traditional travel insurance to cover things like lost bags, delayed flights or trip cancellations, but it is not required. Check with a broker such as InsureMyTrip, which is recommended by Consumer Reports to view a list of plans you can choose from.
