Do you want to publish your writing but struggle with a lack of know-how and fear of rejection? Join us for this hands-on workshop where we will guide you through the process from blank page to published piece. If you are an aspiring author you will learn how and where to submit your work. If you are experienced you will discover new markets and resources to expand your readership. Whether you are working on a novel, memoir, short stories, personal essays or poetry, you will go home with an action plan and the tools to carry it out.

 

WORKSHOP

Led by Peter E. Murphy

Join us for this hands-on workshop to deepen your understanding of the publishing process. It will take place in a computer lab where you will become acquainted with today’s premier submission resources. Then you will apply what you’ve learned through hands-on research and goal setting. This motivating day consists of two parts.

Part 1 – You will learn:

  • How to prepare your manuscript
  • Where to find the right market for the right piece
  • How to easily navigate postal and electronic submissions
  • What literary agents do and when you might need one

Part 2 – You will:

  • Apply what you’ve learned through hands-on research and goal setting
  • Explore the featured resources to identify ideal markets for your work
  • Learn how to efficiently track your submissions
  • Create an action plan to submit to the three best markets after the workshop

Whether you are working on a novel, memoir, short story, personal essay or poetry, you will go home inspired, with a personalized plan and the tools to carry it out.

FACULTY

Peter E. Murphy headshot

Peter E. Murphy was born in Wales and grew up in New York City where he operated heavy equipment, managed a nightclub and drove a taxi. He is the author of eleven books and chapbooks of poetry and prose including two books of writing prompts. More than a dozen excerpts of his memoir-in-progress, Once Upon a Time You Lived in a Castle, have been published as standalone pieces in journals, including “Looking for Thelma,” winner of the 2018 Wilt Nonfiction Chapbook Prize and “Storming the Castle,” winner of the 2019 First Chapter Memoir Prize sponsored by Arch Street Press. The founder of Murphy Writing of Stockton University, Peter has received dozens of awards and fellowships and has led hundreds of workshops for writers and teachers. This workshop will take place at the Stockton University campus in Atlantic City. The campus is across the street from Atlantic City’s famous beach and boardwalk. Located at the foot of Route 40 in the heart of Atlantic City’s historic Chelsea neighborhood, it is just 75 minutes from Philadelphia, 100 minutes from Princeton and just over 2 hours from North Jersey and New York. To keep everyone safe, we are recommending everyone to wear a mask indoors. If these guidelines change prior to the event, we will inform you in advance of any changes. 

If you would like to extend your day and DO AC, here are options to consider:

  • Walk on one of AC’s free beaches.
  • Walk on the Boardwalk and visit the historic Steel Pier.
  • Shop at the Tanger outlets—The Walk.
  • Try your luck at one of the many casinos.
  • Explore AC’s nightlife.
  • Join a new writer friend or two for dinner at an award-winning restaurant.

Pricing + REGISTRATION

Tuition — Sliding Scale: $150-$250

Tuition for this program is based on a sliding scale. If you are able to pay at the higher end of the scale, you will help Murphy Writing offer affordable programming for writers.

Includes the workshop, morning coffee and a light lunch: a sandwich, salad, cookie, chips and bottled water.

Cancellation Policy

For cancellations that are COVID-specific or medical-related:

  • If you need to cancel due to testing positive for COVID-19 within 11 days of the program start, we can offer a full credit on file. 100% of your payment will be good towards a future Murphy Writing program through December 2023.
  • For those with verifiable medical conditions who cancel by February 4, 2023, we can offer a full credit on file. 100% of your payment will be good towards a future Murphy Writing program through December 2023.

For all other cancellations:

  • By February 4 — 50% credit toward one of our upcoming programs
  • After February 4 — No refund

From New York City

  • Bus: New York City to Atlantic City: NJ Transit Bus #319. The Atlantic City Bus Terminal is approximately a 10-minute Uber or taxi ride to the campus.

From Philadelphia

  • Bus: Philadelphia to Atlantic City – NJ Transit Route #551. The Atlantic City Bus Terminal is approximately a 10-minute Uber or taxi ride to the campus.
  • Train: Philadelphia to Atlantic City – NJ Transit Atlantic City Rail Line. The Atlantic City Rail Station is approximately a 6-minute Uber or taxi ride to the campus.

ACCOMMODATIONS (OPTIONAL)

Stockton University Atlantic City is a 10-minute walk from Atlantic City’s Tropicana casino hotel. 

You can also use ACRooms.com to compare prices from more than a dozen hotels with just a few clicks. Although you may find a good deal at an independent motel, we suggest you stick with the major hotel chains and check reviews on a site such as TripAdvisor before you book. If you wish to save money, you can look into hotels in Egg Harbor Township, Absecon and Galloway Township, all of which are within a 20-30 minute drive.

Absolutely. This is the ideal workshop for you to get started! If you are an aspiring author you will learn how and where to submit your work. Peter’s unique teaching will allow this supportive program to benefit both beginning and experienced writers. We pride ourselves on building an encouraging community of writers where all feel welcome.

I’ve already published a few pieces. Will I learn anything new?
Yes! Even if you have already published some of your writing, this workshop will help you discover new markets and resources to expand your readership. You will also be motivated to set new publishing goals and learn tips to more efficiently track your submissions.
