Looking for a feast of form-related prompts to help you shape your poems? Re-energize your writing with a poetry workshop focused on forms, including epistolary, elegy, villanelle, pastoral/ecopoetry and haibun. Each week, we’ll discuss a different poetic form and its specific requirements and thematic traditions. Using carefully-curated models and discussion questions, we’ll unpack significant craft elements together, including syntax, diction, repetition, tone, sensory description and more. Then we’ll share quiet writing time guided by a prompt. We’ll conclude with a chance to show each other our new material, explore future creative possibilities for the work and reflect on our writing processes together.
Beginning and experienced poets are welcome.

FACULTY
Workshop Leader
Dilruba Ahmed is the author of Bring Now the Angels (Pitt Poetry Series, 2020), with poems featured in New York Times Magazine, The Slowdown and Poetry Unbound with Pádraig Ó Tuama. Her debut book of poetry, Dhaka Dust (Graywolf Press), won the Bakeless Prize. Her poems have appeared in Kenyon Review, New England Review and Ploughshares. Her poems have also been anthologized in The Best American Poetry 2019 (Scribner), Halal If You Hear Me (Haymarket Books), Literature: The Human Experience (Bedford/St. Martin’s) and elsewhere. Ahmed is the recipient of The Florida Review’s Editors’ Award, a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Memorial Prize and the Katharine Bakeless Nason Fellowship in Poetry awarded by the Bread Loaf Writers Conference. She holds degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Warren Wilson College’s MFA Program for Writers. She teaches regularly with Chatham University’s MFA Program and Hugo House in Seattle, and joined the faculty at Warren Wilson College’s MFA Program for Writers in January 2021.

The course will be held over Zoom for five Wednesdays 4:30-6:00pm EDT:

Each week’s materials will be made available beforehand so you have a chance to review them ahead of time.
You will receive further details about each deadline and assignment once you enroll in the course.
technical requirements
Materials for the course will be shared via email and a shared Google Drive folder. You will need a computer or tablet and internet access, as well as access to word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word).
To fully participate in the weekly Zoom sessions, you will need access to a webcam and microphone. Those built in to a laptop, tablet or smart phone will do.
Pricing + Registration
Tuition — SLIDING SCALE: $350-$450
Tuition for this program is based on a sliding scale between $350 and $450. If you are able to pay at the higher end of the scale, you will help Murphy Writing offer affordable programming and scholarships for writers.

I’m new to writing workshops. Will I fit in?
Absolutely! Our experienced workshop leaders plan their courses to benefit both beginning and experienced writers. We pride ourselves on building an encouraging community of writers where all feel welcome.
I’ve taken dozens of workshops. What will I get out of this one?
Our faculty challenges experienced writers to push beyond their usual limits. If you have been writing for decades, they will compel you to go deeper, take more risks and experiment with form and content. We know that experienced writers benefit from our programs based on the fact that hundreds of “re-PETERs” have attended three or more of our writing getaways.
I’ve never taken an online workshop before. Do I need special equipment?
No. If you’re reading this website, you probably have everything you need to take this course. You can participate using a laptop or desktop computer, or even a tablet or smart phone.
