Frequently Asked Questions:
Midsummer Online Writing Getaway
MOST ASKED
Q: Can I attend just part of the retreat?
A: We are offering two packages: One for those who would like to participate in a full four-day workshop, and one for those who would like to attend just a single-session pre-Getaway workshop plus the morning and evening activities. See details.
Q: Thanks for providing Sliding Scale Tuition. What should I pay?
A: It depends on which package you choose, but tuition for both packages is based on a sliding scale. You will be able to select any amount within the scale range when you register. If you can only afford the lower end of the scale, we are glad to have you. If you are able to pay at the higher end of the scale, you will help Murphy Writing offer affordable programming and scholarships for writers.
Q: What will Kim Addonizio participate in at the Getaway?
A: Award-winning writer Kim Addonizio will join us as our Featured Reader. We look forward to welcoming her on Saturday, July 10 for an inspiring reading and Q+A session. Note: She will not be leading workshops.
Q: I’m already registered for the Getaway but would like to add on a tutorial. How do I do it?
A: It’s easy. Send an email to info@murphywriting.com asking to add on the item, and we’ll tell you where to go from there.
WORKSHOPS
Q: What time do the workshops take place?
A: Each four-day workshop will meet Friday-Sunday, July 8-11, from 2:00-5:00pm EDT. Peter’s single-session Add-on workshop will take place Thursday, July 7 from 2:00-5:00pm EDT.
Q: What if I’ve never taken a writing workshop before?
A: Welcome to Murphy Writing, where writers of all levels are welcome! We would love to write with you.
Q: I have an M.F.A. and lots of experience in workshops. Will I still benefit?
A: Absolutely. Many of our participants who have advanced degrees use our programs to start new work or develop work in progress. Our award-winning faculty members are experienced in working with poets and writers of all levels.
Q: I registered for one workshop and would like to switch to another. Can I do that?
A: Yes, if there’s room in the workshop you would like to switch to. Please do not use the online registration system which will require that you pay an additional tuition. Contact us (info@murphywriting.com or 609-626-3594) so we can make the switch, and we will refund any money we owe you, or invoice you for money you may owe us. After June 1, a $25 change fee will be charged to switch your workshop, tutorial(s) and/or add-ons.
Q: I’m interested in a workshop that’s already full. Do you have a waitlist?
A: Yes. Our registration system has the capability of adding you to the waitlist for a workshop. In the event of a cancellation, we will notify the person at the top of the list. Note: The same Fine Print and Cancellation Policy applies to all registrants whether they are on the waitlist or not.
ADD-ONS
Q: I’m already registered for the Getaway but would like to add on a tutorial. How do I do it?
A: It’s easy. Send an email to info@murphywriting.com asking to add on the item, and we’ll tell you where to go from there.
Q: How will tutorials work?
A: Tutorials will take place the during the Midsummer Writing Getaway. We strongly recommend you sign up before the event begins, as there are a limited number of tutorials available. Each tutorial will last 40 minutes. As you register for one, we will ask you some preliminary questions about your faculty and timing preferences. We will follow up in July to let you know which day and time your tutorial is scheduled for, as well as how to submit your work ahead of time. Learn more.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
Q: How will the mealtime socials work?
A: The 12:45-1:45pm mealtime socials are an informal opportunity to connect with other participants. They will be moderated by a host each day who will help get the conversation started. All you need to do is show up to the Zoom meeting, meal or snack in hand.
Q: How will the morning creative activities work?
A: We will offer several fun activities outside of workshop time from 10:00-11:00am EDT. Offerings will include yoga, meditation, freewriting and more, with details about each session shared with registered participants. All you need to do is show up to the Zoom meeting, yoga mat or pen and paper in hand.
Q: Can I attend the Open Mics even if I don’t plan to read? How will they work?
A: Whether you choose to read or not, you are welcome to come show support for your fellow participants. Those who wish to read at an Open Mic should plan to enter the Zoom waiting room 15 minutes early to sign up. There will be a host to handle the rest of the moving parts.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Q: Are you offering scholarships to attend this program?
A: Yes. See details.
Q: Do I have to register for the Midsummer Online Writing Getaway to apply for a scholarship?
A: No. You are not required to register and pay for the Getaway when applying for a scholarship. If you wish to register before the results are announced because you plan to attend regardless of whether or not you receive the award, you are more than welcome to do so. Please note: the same Fine Print and Cancellation Policy applies if you need to cancel your registration.
Q: I would like to register to make sure I get a seat in my first choice workshop. Is it still possible to apply for a scholarship, and will I get a refund if I receive one?
A: Yes, you are absolutely welcome to apply, and we will give you a refund if you receive a scholarship. Note: the same Fine Print and Cancellation Policy applies if you need to cancel your registration.
Q: I am applying for a scholarship and am open to fiction, nonfiction and poetry workshops. Is it possible for me to send a writing sample of both?
A: We can only consider one application per writer and recommend submitting your strongest work. It’s just fine if your workshop choices are in a different genre than the writing you submit; we hear from a number of writers wanting to expand into a new genre and support it wholeheartedly.
