Joel Dias-Porter, born and raised in Pittsburgh, served in the US Air Force, and after leaving the service became a professional DJ in the DC area. In 1991, he quit his job and began living in homeless shelters, while undergoing an Afrocentric self-study program. He competed in the National Poetry Slam, finishing second place, and was the 1998 and 1999 Haiku Slam Champion. His poems have been published in Time Magazine, The Washington Post, Callaloo, Antioch Review, Red Brick Review and the anthologies Meow: Spoken Word from the Black Cat, Short Fuse, Role Call, Def Poetry Jam, 360 Degrees of Black Poetry, Slam (The Book) and many others. He has performed on the Today Show, in the documentary SlamNation, on BET and in the feature film Slam. The father of a young son, he has a CD of jazz and poetry on Black Magi Music, entitled LibationSong.
Mike Nees lives and works in Atlantic City, NJ, where he is a case manager for people living with HIV. His fiction has appeared in Typehouse Literary Magazine, matchbook, Heavy Feather and elsewhere. He was featured in 48 Stories by the Atlantic City Arts Foundation for his work as the host of Atlantic City’s Story Slam series. L’Oreal “ElleVintage” Chrisp, from southern New Jersey, is a lover of people, words and Jesus Christ. A journalist, poet, motivational speaker and worship leader, L’Oreal began her journey of words at a very young age, eventually becoming a performance artist sought after by musicians and poets for numerous projects. L’Oreal is an advocate for youth and survivors of sexual abuse. She is part of Beacons in the Park, Mental Projections, Infinite Dreams productions, the Just Rights Production of Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls and the 48 Blocks Art initiative for Atlantic City. The author of He=Art2, she is a curator and host for the southern Jersey Stop the Violence Movement, and A National Association of Black Journalists member and journalist. Her biggest pride is in being a mother to three children alongside her fiancé Chrissy.
