- SECTION 2: Thursdays, March 24 – April 7, 2022, 7:00-8:30pm EDT
If you’re like most high school students, you’ve spent the past four years being told not to write about your experiences and beliefs, and now, the Common Application essay questions are inviting you to do just that.
Fear not! This three-week online course will provide you with the necessary tools and confidence to write an application essay that will stand out among the competition, giving you a better shot at the college of your choice.
You will be guided through initial freewriting and multiple drafts, giving and receiving supportive and constructive feedback from your classmates and the instructor, and leave the course with a polished, application-ready essay.
This workshop will be capped at 8 participants, ensuring personalized attention. See the three-week schedule below.

FACULTY
Section 1 Leader
Christine E. Salvatore will lead Section 1. Christine received her MFA from The University of New Orleans. With 20+ years of teaching academic and creative writing, she currently teaches at Stockton University, in the MFA Program at Rosemont College, and at a public high school in South Jersey where she prepares her AP Literature students each Fall for the college application process.
Section 2 Leader
Lisa Youngblood will lead Section 2. Lisa is an Instructor of Writing and First-Year Studies and the Associate Chair of First-Year Writing at Stockton University. Lisa has been a faculty member at Stockton since 2012 and teaches writing and critical thinking courses, ranging from introductory college writing to advanced argumentative writing. Lisa is an attorney, and she practiced law for over fifteen years prior to joining Stockton as a full-time faculty member. She enjoys using her legal background and expertise to help students improve their writing skills. When she is not giving feedback on student writing or providing professional development on writing pedagogy, Lisa enjoys spending time with her husband, two teenage daughters and large mountain lap dog.
How It Works
Schedule
Both workshop sections will be held over Zoom. You can choose from one of the following sections:
SECTION 1: Mondays, 7:00-8:30pm EST/EDT

SECTION 2: Thursdays, 7:00-8:30pm EDT
- March 24, 2022
- March 31, 2022
- April 7, 2022
Each section will follow a structure similar to what is outlined below:
- Week 1: Topic discussion, generative writing prompts and organizational strategies
- Week 2: Peer and instructor feedback and revision strategies
- Week 3: Peer and instructor feedback and suggestions for polishing the final draft
You will receive additional details after you register, including a participation waiver that needs to be signed by your parent or guardian if you are under age 18.
technical requirements
You will need a computer or tablet and internet access in order to use Zoom. To fully participate, you will need access to a webcam and microphone. Those built into a laptop, tablet or smartphone will do.
Pricing + Registration
Tuition — SLIDING SCALE: $95-$125
Tuition for this program is based on a sliding scale between $95 and $125. If you are able to pay at the higher end of the scale, you will help Murphy Writing offer affordable programming and scholarships for writers.

I’m new to writing workshops. Will I fit in?
Absolutely! Our experienced workshop leaders plan their courses to benefit both beginning and experienced writers. We pride ourselves on building an encouraging community of writers where all feel welcome.
I’ve never taken an online workshop before. Do I need special equipment?
No. If you’re reading this website, you probably have everything you need to take this course. You can participate using a laptop or desktop computer, or even a tablet or smart phone.
Do I need to register for the one-day workshop to participate in this three-week course?
No, you do not need to register for Preparing to Write Your College Application Essay to participate in this three-week course; however, it would benefit you to do so in order to begin gathering potential essay topics.
I’m a parent or guardian and want to register my child for this workshop. Is there anything I should know?
If a child is under age 18, a parent or guardian will need to email info@murphywriting.com a completed participation waiver for their child. This form will be included in the registration confirmation email.
