Prompts
We’ve assembled an archive of nearly 200 writing prompts, which you can respond to in any genre or form. Prompts will be posted each week in our Discord server.
We encourage you to re-see with fresh eyes any prompts you’ve already responded to, and revise what you’ve written.
Sharing
If you write in response to our prompts, we invite you to share your work and read what others have written in our Discord server.
Write Time
If you are craving more accountability and structure, we host free weekly writing sessions over Zoom, a chance to virtually connect with other writers for some dedicated writing time. During each session, we will offer a prompt for you to respond to, but you will be free to write anything you wish.
We will write together on Wednesdays at 7pm EST/EDT. You can join us using this link (as of 9/17/26). Refresh this page each week to be sure you have access to the most current link!
Your host each Wednesday will be Juliet Fletcher, who has been a beloved member of the Murphy Writing community for many years.
How to Join
Access the Discord
To join the Murphy Write-In Discord server, follow these steps:
- You’ll need a Discord account.
- If you already use Discord, log in to your account.
- If you aren’t yet a Discord user:
- Visit discord.com.
- Click “Register” (below the login button).
- Enter your email address and display name.
- Set your password.
- Enter your date of birth and accept terms of service.
- Complete the human verification challenge (CAPTCHA).
- Check your email inbox for a verification message from Discord and click “Verify Email” to finalize your account.
- Join the forum for the Murphy Write-In.
- Visit our Discord page.
- Click “Join Channel.”
- To deter bots, you will be asked a question: “Do you plan on joining the Wednesday live sessions on Zoom?” Please type your answer.
- Once your membership is approved, you can say hello, view past prompts and share your work with other members to enjoy in the channel tabs at the left.
Receive Write Time Reminders
Each Wednesday morning, we will send a reminder to folks about that evening’s Write Time. Please email murphywriting@stockton.edu to request to receive these reminders, and we will add you to the list.
